Many people wonder how homeschooling parents are able to teach, and do all of the things that parenting requires outside of the classroom. It can be challenging, but the advantages far out weigh any obstacles that it takes to educate one’s children at home.

One of the often overlooked advantages of homeschooling is time.

As parents, we often think of the amount of time that is required of the parent. That is true–homeschooling is work and takes an enormous amount of the parent’s time.

However, the flip side of that time equation is the amount of the time that homeschooling saves the students. In traditional schooling, children spend quite a bit of time waiting, and following the planned schedule for 100s sometimes 1000s of children. Time that is needed to keep the system organized and functioning well.

When a child is homeschooled, he has a lot of free time. Time that he can invest in hobbies that often become careers. Sports, reading, writing, playing musical instruments, studying computer program, working on a rach, learning dance, studying voice. The opportunities are limitless, and homeschooling allows students to dig deep into their favorite subjects, and gives them the opportunity to hone their skills.

One of the most important advantages is customization.

Homeschooling can help a child to blossom and bring out his full potential like nothing else can. Unlike a traditional class room setting, your child can develop  at his own pace and cover the subjects he needs to in the depth he needs to until he understands and is ready to move on.

This allows your child to learn as they should be learning and at a pace they can maintain. In a public system the slower children are often left behind. Children at home can spend 2 years on algebra, and not fall behind. Equally, if your child is interested in the stem subjects (science, technology, engineering,  and mathematics), a parent can allow that student to complete algebra 1, algebra 2, and geometry in the same year. That type of acceleration does not happen often in a busy classroom.

Another advantage is the flexibility to alter the school schedule.

Most homeschooling parents modify their homeschool schedule to accomdate their family schedules and priorities. Learning opportunities are mixed with vacations to museums, civil war re-enactments, or a myriad of other opportunities. Of course many parents take advantage of such learning opportunities. The difference with homeschooling is that this type of hands on learning is incorporated into family life as well as school lessons. Homes and school are one, and life is learning. This affords a flexibility that allows parents to modify lessons to fit the family’s needs, without sacrificing learning nor family time.

Academic success is a real advantage of homeschooling!

Homeschooling parents have the ability to guide their children’s education, taking advantage of customization, free time, and flexibility to ensure that their children understand that life is about learning and growing. That is a recipe for success!

It’s Back to (Home) School time!!

I’ve never been more thankful for the freedom to homeschool my kids as I am this year.  I can’t imagine the uncertainty and stress that many families are feeling right now not knowing what the upcoming school year will look like.  As a homeschooling parent, I was able to continue teaching my children, with very little disruption to our academic plans. And right now we are planning our fall semester as I’m sure you are too!

Well, I’ve teamed up with a great group of homeschool bloggers that would like to help and bless a few homeschool families this year.  We are giving THREE families $200 to spend at Rainbow Resource Center to buy curriculum, resources, and supplies for their homeschools.
