If your vision of teaching involves an expert standing in front of their class expounding knowledge, it might be intimidating to think about how you will homeschool your kids on subjects you don’t know anything about. But not only is it possible, it can be easier than you think and an amazing experience for everyone!

Reframe what it means to teach

Instead of getting psyched out by what you need to “teach,” think of your role as a facilitator of learning. You’re there to help them explore and discover the topic. You don’t need to know everything about a subject. Honestly, you don’t need to know anything. You need to help them find out more!

Even if you’re not an unschooler, a more relaxed approach to subjects you don’t know can help take the pressure off. Watch documentaries together. Brainstorm questions and research the answers.

Pro Tip:

Being honest about not knowing a topic and modeling a curious mindset is a wonderful lesson for your children in and of itself!

You only need to stay one step ahead

If the relaxed approach is not your thing, go the opposite route. Look for a thorough, scripted curriculum. Preview the material one week in advance to give yourself time to look up unfamiliar words and concepts, or watch a few YouTube videos on the subject.

You don’t need to be able to write a dissertation on the topic. You just need to be able to teach the next lesson, and a quality curriculum will equip you for that from step one.

Consider outsourcing

Fortunately, there is an enormous amount of online and in-person enrichment courses, many crafted specifically for homeschoolers, for every age range, and covering every subject imaginable. Joining a co-op is another option to consider where you can trade teaching a class in a subject you are solid at for someone else’s skill in a subject you’re not.

Pro Tip:

Have a big kid or teenager? A wonderful way to spend quality time together and expand your own knowledge is to take a class along with your child. Many veteran homeschoolers say that learning new things alongside their children is one of the biggest benefits.

Are you ready for a new (home) school year?

Would you like a chance to win $200 to help purchase supplies?

It’s that time of year, when many homeschoolers are busy preparing for a brand new school year.  Some of you may have already started your new year, and some of you may have never stopped!

Planning for a new school year and finalizing curriculum choices can sometimes be overwhelming and stressful, especially when you are trying to stick to a tight homeschool budget.

I’ve gotten together with a great group of bloggers to make getting ready for your new school year just a little bit easier and hopefully a little less stressful for you.  How does $200 sound in helping you buy curriculum, books, games, puzzles, and educational supplies?  Three people will win a $200 gift card to Rainbow Resource Center!! Our hope is that we can bless a few homeschool families (although we wish we could bless many more) so they can buy the curriculum and supplies they need for their school year.

To enter for your chance to win, simply use the Rafflecopter form below to enter.  Now I know this is quite a few entries, but each of these bloggers has generously chipped in their own money to make this giveaway possible, so I hope you will take the time to do all of the entries.  And hey, the more entries you do, the better your odds are of winning!
